Alida

Picture
When Alida first arrived with me she appeared to be very psychologically and physically damaged. She had lost a foal and her back and neck were a terrible mess, as well as her hooves. I had to deal with sheared heels and front hooves that toed out, back hooves that wanted to flare, as well as four contracted heels. For at least 6 months Alida didn't put on weight despite consistent deworming, all the food she could eat, great dentistry and many a back treatment. She was very quiet and minded her own business, never demanding much attention. I was a bit confused as to what could still be wrong after all my efforts, but in her own time, Alida blossomed into a little fat, well-muscled jumping machine. This little 14.3hh Thoroughbred taught me a great deal. I learned how to deal some pretty rotten hoof problems as well as a TMJ (jaw) problem which meant Alida couldn't be ridden in a bit. But most of all, I learned to be patient and it paid off in the end. Despite all of her conformation faults, Alida went on to have a successful jumping career. She competed up to 90cm against horses and threw a jump that could easily have taken her further.
