A few months ago I bought a 17 year old Thoroughbred out of a sad situation. I named him Ya'akov which is Hebrew for Jacob. For the first time in many, many years, he was allowed to live out side with other horses and have 24/7 access to roughage as well as bare feet of course. My plan was to rehabilitate his chronic injuries and retire him at the Farm Animal Centre for Education in Grahamstown. Sadly, when the vet examined him he advised me to have him euthanized as he had a permanent injury resulting in lameness in the one hind leg, a horrifically painful swayed back and chronic ulcers. It was deeply saddening to know that he was ridden like this for a long time but I am happy that I was able to give him a few days of happiness.
